How to Lose Weight With God and Why I Call It Weight Loss IN God

Woman journaling with Christian weight loss reflection cards during her Weight Loss with God journey

“There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.” — Proverbs 14:12

For years, many of us have approached weight loss the same way: find the right plan, try harder, be more disciplined, and hope this time we can finally stick with it.

And when we decide we want to lose weight with God, it can be easy to simply add Him to that same process.

We pray over the diet.

We ask God to help us have more willpower.

We find Scriptures about self-control.

We ask Him to help us get to our goal weight.

But what if God wants to do something much deeper than help us successfully follow another weight-loss plan?

That is why I have started using the phrase Weight Loss IN God.

Because this isn't simply about losing weight with God's help.

It's about allowing the entire journey to take place in Him.

Your identity in Him.
Your healing in Him.
Your obedience to Him.
Your mind being renewed by His Word.
Your choices being led by His Spirit.

And yes, that can change the way you care for your body. But the goal isn't simply becoming a smaller version of yourself.

The goal is becoming more like Christ.

Weight Loss Isn't the Starting Point

One of the biggest shifts we can make is to stop beginning with:

“What should I eat?”

and begin asking:

“Lord, what are You trying to show me?”

Because sometimes food isn't really the issue.

Maybe you're turning to food when you're stressed, lonely, disappointed, overwhelmed, or bored.

Maybe you've spent years believing things about yourself that don't agree with what God says.

Maybe you've been trying to control your body while ignoring what is happening in your soul.

Or maybe God is simply asking you to become a better steward of something that belongs to Him.

Whatever the root may be, another food plan can't reveal it to you.

But the Holy Spirit can.

Stewardship Changes the Conversation

Your body is not your identity.

The number on the scale does not determine your worth, your qualification, or how loved you are by God.

But that doesn't mean your body doesn't matter.

There is a difference between idolizing your body and stewarding your body.

Stewardship means recognizing that what you've been given ultimately belongs to God, and asking Him how He wants you to care for it.

That changes the question from:

“How do I finally get the body I want?”

to:

“Lord, how do You want me to steward the body You've given me?”

That may mean changing how you eat.

It may mean moving your body more.

It may mean getting enough rest.

It may mean learning to pause instead of immediately responding to an urge.

And sometimes it means dealing with something much deeper than food.

So Where Do You Start?

You don't need to have the entire journey figured out.

Start by bringing the journey before God.

1. Pray before you make another plan.

Before deciding what you're going to cut out, count, track, or change, ask God what He wants to address.

Ask Him to reveal patterns you may have overlooked and places where you've been relying on food, your own strength, or another weight-loss method instead of Him.

2. Let Scripture become your foundation.

We don't renew our minds simply by thinking more positively.

We renew our minds with truth.

Begin finding Scriptures that speak to the areas God is highlighting—identity, self-control, emotional eating, stewardship, obedience, perseverance, or whatever He is working on in this season.

Don't just read them to check a box. Sit with them. Pray through them. Ask the Holy Spirit what He wants you to see.

3. Learn to pause and listen.

Not every urge requires an immediate response.

Sometimes one of the most powerful things you can do is pause long enough to ask:

Am I physically hungry?

What am I feeling right now?

What do I actually need?

Holy Spirit, what are You leading me to do?

That pause creates space for obedience instead of automatically repeating an old pattern.

4. Journal what God is showing you.

Journaling isn't about documenting every detail perfectly.

It can become a place where you notice patterns, record what God is revealing, work through Scripture, and respond to what the Holy Spirit is showing you.

Over time, you may begin seeing connections that you couldn't see when you were simply focused on food and the scale.

5. Stop making the scale the final judge.

Weight may change as you learn to steward your body differently.

But weight loss cannot be the thing that tells you whether this journey is working.

You can lose pounds without becoming more whole.

And you can be in a season where the scale is moving slowly while God is doing tremendous work in your heart, your thinking, your habits, and your relationship with Him.

The scale can give you information.

It cannot give you identity.

This Is Discipleship, Not Just Weight Loss

That's the heart behind Weight Loss IN God.

I'm not interested in taking diet culture and simply adding Bible verses to it.

I believe God can use this area of our lives as a place of discipleship.

A place where we learn surrender.

A place where we practice obedience.

A place where our minds are renewed.

A place where hidden things come into the light.

A place where we learn to walk by the Spirit instead of automatically following every desire of the flesh.

And as the Spirit leads, our soul begins to align—and our body can follow.

So if you've been searching for how to lose weight with God, I want to invite you to go deeper.

Don't simply ask God to bless the weight-loss journey you've already planned.

Invite Him to lead it.

Because this was never supposed to be only about losing weight.

It's about becoming whole + holy.
